A fake surrogate has been jailed
A fake surrogate who conned a childless couple into believing she was carrying their baby has been jailed for two years.
Cruel Samantha Brown, 25, contacted Benita and Mark Cutter after they placed an online advert seeking a surrogate mother.
The couple, from Humberside, travelled to Tain, where they stayed with Brown and her then partner, Karen Galashan, for four days in July 2013, the Daily Record reported .
During this time, Brown claimed to attempt artificial insemination on a daily basis, using samples provided by Mark, Inverness Sheriff Court heard at an earlier hearing.
The Cutters paid more than £8000 into Brown’s bank account after she assured them the process had been a success. She sent them scans as well as demands for fake lost wages, maternity clothes and antenatal classes.
After nine months, Brown, from Tain, Ross-shire,told the couple she had been in a car crash and lost their baby.
She even sent them a picture of a dead child to back up her sick lies.
Sentencing her, Sheriff Margaret Neilson said: “What makes this fraud particularly despicable is the callous, calculated and cynical manner in which it was carried out over a 10-month period.”
Brown admitted the surrogacy fraud and inducing the Cutters to pay her £8307 in fake expenses between June 25, 2013, and April 20, 2014.
Charges against her co-accused Galashan, 44, were dropped earlier due to insufficient evidence.
Brown will serve her sentence at the conclusion of a three-year prison term imposed in October after she shot a neighbour in the face with an air rifle.
It happened after the woman confronted her over the shooting of gulls.
Brown will also be on supervised release for a further year.
